How's Your Critical Thinking and Decision Making Skills?

Critical Thinking is a mode of thinking (about any subject or problem) in which the thinker improves the quality of their thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them.
Today, we focus on this topic, and offer a range of tips, articles and mind tools to help you think about thinking and make better decisions.

UPCOMING TRAINING DATES

10th Anniversary - Buzan Centre: Australia/NZ

It's been ten years since we ran the first Buzan Licensed Instructor (BLI) program in Australia! Wow!
Mindwerx started the Buzan Centre in late 2000 and in March 2001 we accredited our first instructors. (Now trained over 150 teachers, trainers, coaches and enthusiasts).
In late 2001 we invited Tony Buzan to Australia and he met with BLIs, spoke to several organisations, ran the first Australian Memory Championship with Jennifer, and had more than 25 media engagements.
That was just the start. Since then we have enjoyed hosting Tony many times, and have just set dates for his next tour in November 2011. Watch for that news!

Also since then, Bill Jarrard has become a Senior BLI, Jennifer Goddard has become a Master_Trainer for Buzan Licensed Instructors and ThinkBuzan Licensed Instructors (TLI), and the Senior Arbiter at the World Memory Championships. From little things...big things grow!
So Happy Anniversary to us and all our BLIs. Thanks to everyone for their support over the years.

SPECIAL_FEATURES

Ideas are almost never solutions.

Many people go into brainstorming sessions expecting to find solutions to problems, develop new products, design clever marketing strategies, or find ways to resolve the issues at hand.

Nothing could be further from the truth - brainstorming is not designed to come up with solutions and designs.
Brainstorming is done to generate ideas - that is, the time and space for 'divergent' thinking.

Solutions come from 'convergent' thinking, when possibilities are developed into potential solutions ready for testing.

A recent 90 minute divergent thinking session lead to 6 months of convergent design that resulted in 12 new products.

That is the nature of Deliberate Creative Thinking.  Ideas are vital, but it is solutions we want and need.  That's the end_game.

As Edward de Bono said "An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea."

Mindwerx facilitations and creative thinking courses focus on helping people find solutions.

You can now get the Mindwerx Deliberate Creativity & Innovation pocket_guide and other Mind Tools for your team to use everyday.

"Leadership Lessons from the 24th Century"

One of the most effective methods of self-development is to observe experts and model their behaviour.

But where are the great leaders for us to model ourselves after?

Sometimes they are in the future!

First published in 1993, Bill's article "Leadership Lessons from the 24th Century" has been reprinted in various journals and, what started out as a bit of fun, has stood the test of time.

Read Bill's article (particularly if you are a Star Trek fan) in the Mindwerx Creativity Corner.

Six Step Leadership Framework for Deliberate Thinking

Understanding how to connect thinking techniques to real issues is a challenge for organisations wanting to encourage innovation.

Leaders do their best to inspire people with their vision, purpose, and values, while managers translate these into team and individual performance plans.

But connecting these with deliberate thinking can be a mystery.

To help leaders make sense of how to do this, Bill has designed a six step framework for deliberate thinking:-

  1. Focus the thinking
  2. Plan the thinking
  3. Doing the thinking
  4. Making decisions
  5. Taking actions
  6. Review and improve

Procrastinate Later!

Procrastination is the prime reason golden opportunities are missed.

In many organisations decisions are pushed to higher and higher levels of authority until nothing gets done.

What's needed is a critical thinking framework that can be used at every level to improve decision making.

BusinessDictionary.com defines Decision Making as:

The thought process of selecting a logical choice from among the available options.

When trying to make a good decision, a person must weight the positives and negatives of each option, and consider all the alternatives.

For effective decision making, a person must be able to forecast the outcome of each option as well, and based on all these items, determine which option is the best for that particular situation.

In his article on critical thinking for decision making, Bill suggests Edward de Bono's DATT framework is a highly effective approach that can be employed at all levels of an organisation
